- In Sherlock’s absence, John gets a pet, Gladstone. Traditionally, a bulldog.
- Only rather then a dog, Gladstone is a cat that favors only John and when Sherlock returns is a total dick to him (as cats are). Everyone hates the cat other then John (”Gladstone isn’t rotten, he’s a high functioning sociopath, you should appreciate that.”)
- Mrs.Hudson absently mentions how attached John has been to Gladstone while Sherlock was gone, finding him out by the bins.
- Sherlock ends up competing for John’s attention/time with both a woman whom John has gotten engaged to (Mary) and a cat and feels like a complete idiot for being so bothered over it.
- Its not so much Mary that bothers Sherlock, as he can’t blame John for finding a companion in his absence, its the fact that Gladstone the cat seemed to completely take over Sherlocks place in 221 B., and thats what really annoys him (no matter how many times he sneaks Gladstone outside, he somehow gets back in.)
- Gladstone’s ‘spot’ in the house, other then John’s lap, is Sherlock’s chair. This causes severe conflict. (“Would you stop fighting with a cat?? Honestly Sherlock, you act like he’s out to get you personally.”)
